Hydroponics Program for High School Students

Schedule:

  • Duration: 12 weeks (3 sessions per week)
  • Time: 3:30 PM - 5:30 PM
  • Location: Nonprofit facility, equipped with a hydroponics lab and outdoor space

Curriculum Outline:

Week 1-3: Introduction to Hydroponics

  • Basics of hydroponic systems (NFT, DWC, ebb & flow, etc.)
  • The science of plant growth: water, nutrients, and light
  • Environmental benefits of hydroponics

Week 4-6: System Setup and Maintenance

  • Designing and building small-scale hydroponic systems
  • Monitoring pH, nutrient levels, and water quality
  • Identifying and troubleshooting common plant issues

Week 7-9: Advanced Techniques

  • Crop selection and growth optimization
  • Automation and technology in hydroponics (e.g., timers, sensors)
  • Introduction to aquaponics as an extension

Week 10-12: Entrepreneurship and Application

  • Developing a business plan for a hydroponic venture
  • Harvesting, packaging, and marketing produce
  • Hosting a community market day to showcase their products
